The Monsoon Softens What Was Hard

In Banaras, the monsoon arrives without announcement. One evening the stone is hot and the dust sits on everything. The next morning the stone is wet, and the whole city smells of river and old brick and the first jasmine of the year.

Everything here is made of brick and ancient stone, and yet it drinks.

The Ganga rises. The steps darken. The dust settles and quietly admits it has been tired.

Rain teaches what no lecture can: that nothing solid stays solid. The road becomes a river. The river becomes a road again. The day you had planned dissolves by ten in the morning, and something quieter takes its place.

Softening is not defeat. It is what has to happen before anything can grow.

Up in the Himalaya the same rain falls on stone at Tapovan and Gaumukh, and the Bhagirathi swells with it. The river does not argue with the sky about how much water there should be. It only makes room.

And the practice follows the season. In the monsoon the body is heavy and the mind is wide open — there is less to fight, and more to receive. A shorter sitting, a slower walk, a long lie on the floor while the rain works on the roof — these are not lesser practices. They are the practice of this weather.

If you are holding something tightly this season — a role, a grudge, a version of yourself that stopped fitting a long time ago — the rain is not asking you to throw it away. It is asking you to let it be watered.

You do not have to solve the monsoon. You only have to stay soft long enough to notice what it leaves behind.

And then the sky clears. And even the dry ground remembers the rain.
